Exhibition from February 10 to April 18, 2021
On the first anniversary of the renaming of Amherst Street to Atateken, retrace the evolution of this major Montreal artery dating back to the 19th century!
Find out who General Amherst was and why his genocidal remarks towards the First Peoples caused so much controversy. In the hope of achieving reconciliation, the City of Montreal has chosen the Mohawk name Atateken, which means “brothers and sisters”.
The exhibition will begin with a journey back in time through the histories of industries, transportation and businesses that were part of this neighbourhood’s dynamic evolution, including the inception of the Gay Village as early as the 1980s.
Welcome to Atateken!
