Montreal, Tuesday April 23, 2019.– Underground culture in the 1980s had a significant impact on the cultural development of Montreal and Quebec. The exhibition looks back on this era through the evolution of the work of Zïlon, his collaborations with other notable artists, and the various emblematic and alternative spaces that bore witness to his art, from the Gay Village to the Quartier des Spectacles. The exhibition is on display from June 26 to September 1, 2019, at the Écomusée du fier monde.

A multidisciplinary movement
The Montreal underground that emerges in the 1970s is characterized by improvisation, multidisciplinary work, and performance art: music, dance, theatre, visual arts. Many recognized artists came out of this movement and went on to contribute to the modernization of Quebecois culture and its current state of flourishing.

Zïlon is both a precursor and a witness – a fundamentally multidisciplinary artist who is deeply rooted in the history of the Centre-Sud. Through artifacts, works of art, photos, videos, press materials, the exhibition explores the Montreal underground of the 1980s through numerous themes: the evolution of the work of Zïlon, his collaborations with notable artists from various disciplines, technological advancements that encourage multidisciplinary work, emblematic alternative spaces linked to the underground movement, and finally the Gay Village as a space for alternative and engaged artistic creation.

An emblematic figure of the Montreal underground, Zïlon is a self-taught and versatile artist. He has been making his mark since the 1970s through faces drawn at random in various public spaces. Playing with medium and technology – and often infusing his music into the process – Zïlon has continued to reinvent his work through the years. His are the thousand and one faces of human struggle against anxiety and inner demons. His works are part of numerous collections across the world.
