Montreal, Wednesday May 18, 2016.- The exhibition Regard inédit sur mon quartier brings together close to fifty black and white and colour photographs of Daniel Heïkalo. Captured in the 1970s, the series is dedicated to Heïkalo’s childhood neighbourhood, Montreal’s Centre-Sud. It’s an occasion to see the streets of the Centre-Sud through the eyes of the photographer and discover what makes it so unique. Shots of facades, courtyards, alleyways, and winter scenes all help to illustrate unseen aspects of the neighbourhood. A feast for the eyes for lovers of Montreal! The exhibition will be presented from May 19 to August 28, 2016, at the Écomusée du fier monde.

Eyes on the Centre-Sud
Captured during a series of aimless strolls, the photographs emphasize everyday details. Dive into a familiar universe that nonetheless feels lost, one that’s both contemporary and distant. Rear tenements, alleyways, small shops, schools, houses that have been damaged or abandoned, architectural details and clotheslines all help to recreate the past. The passing of time is especially felt in certain shots, whether it’s of a fire alarm terminal or a street vendor selling oil.
The photographer knew how to capture the light of dawn and dusk, shadows and reflections on the snow, a quality that gives his images a particular hue.
